Water Softener and Filtration Installation in Northern Utah
Northern Utah water is hard and mineral-rich. A softener or filtration system treats it before it scales your pipes, fixtures and appliances.
Is hard water leaving scale on your faucets and fixtures?
If you see white crust on faucets, spots on dishes and soap that won't lather, your water is hard, and a water softener installed on your main line removes the minerals behind it. Water across Northern Utah is hard, which means it carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Those minerals leave scale inside pipes, water heaters, dishwashers and fixtures, and they make every kind of cleaning harder. A softener treats the water as it enters the house, so every tap after it gets the benefit. Filtration solves different problems, like sediment or a chlorine taste. We install softeners and filtration systems as part of our plumbing services.
Warning signs of hard water at home
White crust on faucets and showerheads
That chalky buildup is mineral scale. It clogs aerators and showerhead holes, so the spray gets weaker and uneven.
Spots on dishes and glass shower doors
Cloudy glasses and a hazy film on shower glass are minerals left behind as water dries.
Soap and shampoo that won't lather
Hard water fights soap. You use more of it, and a sticky film stays on tubs, sinks and laundry.
A water heater that pops or rumbles
Scale settles at the bottom of a tank water heater. Popping and rumbling as it heats means the burner is working through a layer of mineral, which wastes energy and wears the tank.
Common causes of water problems a softener or filter can fix
Minerals picked up underground
As water moves through rock and soil before it reaches your tap, it dissolves calcium and magnesium. Our region's water picks up plenty of both.
Heat that speeds up scale
Minerals come out of the water faster when it is heated. That is why water heaters, tankless units and dishwashers often show hard-water damage first.
Sediment and grit
Sand, rust flakes and grit from older water lines can cloud water and wear out valves. A sediment filter catches them before they reach your fixtures.
Chlorine taste and odor
City water is treated with chlorine to keep it safe, and some people notice the taste or smell. A carbon filter can reduce it.
What to expect from a water softener installation
We set a time during business hours and start by testing how hard your water is. We ask how many people live in the house and how much water you use, because that tells us what size softener fits. Then we pick the right spot, usually where the main line enters the house and before the water heater. A softener needs a drain for its cleaning cycle, called regeneration, and an outlet for its control valve. We explain your options and give you the price before any work starts.
Installation day
We shut off the water and connect the softener to the main line with a bypass valve, so you can take it out of the loop for service without losing water to the house. We run the drain line, set the control for your water and household, and add salt to the brine tank. Many homes keep the outdoor faucets on unsoftened water, since lawns and gardens don't need it, and we plan that with you. Then we flush the system, check every connection for leaks and show you how to use the bypass and check the salt.
Filtration options
For sediment, a whole-house sediment filter can go on the main line. For chlorine taste and odor, a carbon filter helps. Some households add a drinking water filter at the kitchen sink. We recommend only what your water test supports.

Box Elder County. See softener installation in Brigham City, Perry, Willard, Corinne and Tremonton. Town pages: Brigham City, Perry, Willard, Corinne, Tremonton and Mantua. Hard, mineral-rich water is the norm in these towns, and crusted faucets are often the first thing people notice.
Cache Valley. See softener installation in Logan and Hyrum. Town pages: Logan, Hyrum, Nibley, North Logan and Smithfield. Long heating seasons keep water heaters busy here, and scale makes them work harder still.
Weber and Davis County. See softener installation in Layton. Town pages: Layton, Ogden, North Ogden and South Ogden. Older homes here often show years of scale in their pipes, and newer homes are a good time to start soft.
