Duct Cleaning and Sealing

Air duct cleaning, duct sealing and repair, and duct insulation so heated and cooled air reaches every room.

Are your ducts holding back your heating and cooling?

If some rooms stay uncomfortable, dust comes back fast or your bills keep climbing, your ducts are often part of the reason. Ducts are the hidden metal and flexible tubes that carry heated and cooled air from your furnace, air conditioner or heat pump to each room, then bring it back through the return vents. When they are dirty, leaky or poorly insulated, even a well-tuned system struggles to keep the house comfortable. Your ducts touch every room, so we treat them as their own part of the job. Our duct work comes in two services:

  • Air duct cleaning: removing dust and debris from the supply and return ducts, the registers and the blower area, plus dryer vent cleaning.
  • Duct sealing and repair: closing leaks at joints and seams, reconnecting or replacing damaged runs, and insulating ducts in attics, crawl spaces and garages.

Many of the towns we serve also have their own duct sealing page, listed by area further down.

Warning signs of duct problems

Rooms at the end of the line never get enough air

The rooms farthest from the furnace get a weak trickle while rooms close to it feel fine. Air is likely leaking out along the way, or a run is pinched or disconnected.

Dust settles right after you clean

A fine layer of dust on furniture soon after dusting can mean the ducts are carrying debris, or that leaky return ducts are drawing dust in from the attic, crawl space or garage.

Whistling, rattling or booming

A whistle often comes from air squeezing through a gap. A rattle can be a loose section. A boom when the system starts can mean ducts that are too small for the air being pushed through them.

Musty smells or debris at the vents

Debris, pest droppings or a musty odor coming out of the registers point to buildup or moisture inside the ductwork. That calls for a closer look.

Common causes of duct trouble

Freeze-thaw seasons loosen joints

Metal ducts grow and shrink a little as temperatures swing between cold winters and hot summers. Over many seasons, joints pull apart and old tape dries out and lets go.

Ducts in unheated spaces

Ducts that run through attics, crawl spaces and garages sit in the cold all winter and the heat all summer. Without good insulation, the air inside loses its warmth or its chill before it reaches you, and cold ducts can drip with condensation in July.

Buildup from everyday life

Seasonal dust, pet hair, remodeling dust and the occasional spell of wildfire smoke get pulled into the return vents and settle in the ducts. Construction debris turns up in newer homes too.

Damage nobody saw

Flexible ducts get crushed during attic work. Runs get knocked loose by a remodel or by pests. Because ducts are out of sight, these problems can go unnoticed for years.

What to expect when we check your ducts

Our technician starts by asking which rooms bother you and what you have noticed. Then we look at every part of the duct system we can reach in the basement, attic, crawl space and garage. We check joints, seams, insulation and the connections at the furnace. We measure airflow at the registers and compare rooms, and we look at the filter and the return vents. Once we know what is going on, we explain it and recommend the fix that fits:

  • Cleaning when the ducts are sound but full of dust and debris.
  • Sealing when air is escaping at joints, seams and gaps.
  • Repair when a section is disconnected, crushed or missing its insulation.
  • Replacement of a run when it is rusted through, badly damaged or too small for the air it has to carry.

Some homes need a mix of these, and many need only one. You see the price before we start, and duct repairs carry a warranty on parts and labor. When ducts are part of a bigger upgrade, we plan them together with your new equipment on our HVAC system installation and replacement page. Building a new home? See new construction HVAC.

Clean, tight ducts stay that way longer when the rest of the system gets yearly care. Our VIP Maintenance Plan costs $240 a year and includes one 2-hour visit a year covering an 88-point HVAC and plumbing inspection, a 1-inch filter replacement and a written report, plus 10% off repairs and priority scheduling.

Ducts move the air, and other equipment keeps it fresh. Our ventilation systems bring in outdoor air and send stale air out, and air purifiers and whole-home filtration clean the air already moving through the house. For the equipment your ducts connect to, start at whole-system HVAC.
