Generators in Northern Utah
Standby generator installation, maintenance and repair, plus safe transfer switch hookups for portable generators.
What keeps your home running when the power goes out?
A standby generator keeps your furnace, sump pump and fridge running in an outage, because it is wired into your home and starts on its own when the power drops. It runs on natural gas or propane. Most gas furnaces need power to run their blower and controls. So a winter outage can leave a house cold even with the gas still on. We install, maintain and repair generators for homes and businesses. That includes whole-home standby units and safe hookups for portable generators. Generators are one of our commercial and specialty services.
Warning signs you need a generator or generator service
Your furnace stops when the power does
In a winter outage the furnace cannot run without power for its blower and controls. On a sub-zero night the house cools quickly, and pipes along outside walls can freeze.
Your basement depends on a sump pump
A sump pump works hardest during spring snowmelt and heavy storms. Storms are also when outages happen. Without backup power the pump stops and the water can rise.
Your generator fails its test run
Most standby generators run a short self-test on a set schedule. If yours will not start, runs rough or shows a warning light during that test, it needs service before the next outage.
You run a portable generator on extension cords
Cords snaking through a window are a hassle and limit what you can power. Plugging a generator into a wall outlet is dangerous for you and for the utility crews working on the lines. A transfer switch solves both problems.
Common causes of generator problems
A weak or dead battery
The battery cranks the engine. Cold weather and age drain it, and it is one of the most common reasons a standby generator fails to start.
Old oil, filters and spark plugs
A generator has an engine much like a car. Oil breaks down, filters clog and spark plugs wear, even when the unit sits idle most of the year.
Transfer switch faults
The transfer switch moves your home from utility power to generator power and back again. Worn contacts or loose wiring can keep that handoff from happening.
Fuel supply issues
A closed gas valve, a low propane tank or a problem in the gas line keeps the engine from running. We check the fuel supply on every service visit.
What to expect from installation, maintenance and repair
For a new generator, we start with a visit during business hours. We talk about what you want to keep running. That might be a few key circuits like the furnace, fridge and sump pump, or the whole house. We look at your electrical panel, your fuel supply and the spot outside where the unit can sit with proper clearance. Then we recommend a size and a fuel, natural gas or propane, and give you the price before any work starts. We offer free estimates on new system installations.
On install day we set the generator, install the transfer switch and make the electrical and fuel connections. If a new gas line is needed, our gas line work covers it. Then we test the whole setup by simulating an outage and walk you through how it works. New installations come with our workmanship warranty, and financing is available through our lending partners; see financing.
Generator maintenance and repair
Maintenance includes changing the oil and filters, checking the battery and spark plugs, tightening connections and testing the transfer switch. When a generator fails, we find the cause and quote the repair before we start. Repairs come with a warranty on parts and labor. For portable generators, we install a manual transfer switch and an inlet on the outside wall so you can connect the safe way. Never run a portable generator inside your home or garage, because its exhaust contains carbon monoxide.
Our VIP Maintenance Plan looks after your home's heating, cooling and plumbing: $240 a year for one 2-hour visit a year covering an 88-point HVAC and plumbing inspection, a 1-inch filter replacement and a written report, plus 10% off repairs and priority scheduling.
