Mini Splits

Mini-Split Replacement in Northern Utah

When an old mini-split keeps failing, we remove it and install a new ductless system sized for the rooms it serves today.

Is it time to replace your ductless mini-split?

It is time to replace your mini-split when it keeps needing repairs, can no longer keep a room comfortable on cold nights, or loses its compressor late in its life. This page is about swapping out a mini-split you already own. We take out the worn outdoor unit and indoor heads and put a new system in their place, sized for the rooms it serves today. Adding a mini-split to a room that has never had one is a different job, covered on our mini-split installation page. If your system is fairly young and just acting up, start with ductless AC repair. The rest of our ductless work is under ductless mini-splits.

Warning signs your mini-split should be replaced

Repairs keep coming back

One repair on an aging system is normal. A second and a third for the same complaint within a couple of seasons tells you the whole unit is wearing out. At some point the money is better spent on new equipment than on keeping the old one alive.

It loses ground on cold nights

Older mini-splits lose much of their heating power as the temperature drops. If a room goes chilly on sub-zero nights while the head blows lukewarm air, the system may no longer be a good match for a Northern Utah winter.

Refrigerant leaks that return

A leak that gets patched and recharged, then shows up again, often means the coils or tubing are corroding. Some older systems also run on a refrigerant that is no longer made, which makes each recharge harder to justify.

Noise, error codes and rising bills

A compressor that grinds or rattles, error lights that keep coming back and power bills that climb each year all point the same way. The system is working harder and giving you less.

Common causes of mini-split failure

A worn compressor

The compressor sits in the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant between the units. It is the heart of the system. After many seasons of heating and cooling it can weaken or fail, and on an older system a new compressor is hard to justify.

Corrosion on the outdoor coil

The outdoor coil sits out in the weather all year. Freeze-thaw cycles, moisture and seasonal dust slowly wear down its thin metal fins and tubes. Once they start to leak, patches seldom last.

Circuit board and sensor failures

Each indoor head and the outdoor unit have circuit boards and temperature sensors. Power surges and age damage them, and replacement boards for older models can be hard to find.

The wrong size from the start

A head that is too big for its room starts and stops constantly. One that is too small runs without a break. Both wear out early, and a replacement is the chance to get the size right.

What to expect when we replace your mini-split

It begins with a visit during business hours. We look over the existing heads, the outdoor unit and the line set, which is the copper tubing and wiring between them. We check the electrical circuit and work out how much heating and cooling each room really needs. Rooms change over the years, so we size the new system for the space as it is now.

Then we explain your options in plain language. Sometimes a repair still makes sense, and we will tell you. When replacement is the better choice, you see the full price before anything is removed. We offer free estimates on new system installations, and financing is available through our lending partners. Our financing page has the details. On install day we:

  • Recover the refrigerant from the old system the way EPA rules require.
  • Remove the old indoor heads, outdoor unit and mounting hardware.
  • Inspect the line set and replace it when it is damaged or does not suit the new equipment.
  • Mount the new heads and set the outdoor unit on a pad or wall bracket that keeps it above the snow.
  • Pressure test the lines, pull a vacuum to clear out air and moisture, and charge the system.
  • Start it up, test heating and cooling in every room and show you how the controls work.

We size the replacement system for the rooms it serves and install it ourselves, and new installations come with our workmanship warranty. To keep the new system in shape, look at our VIP Maintenance Plan: $240 a year for one 2-hour visit a year covering an 88-point HVAC and plumbing inspection, a 1-inch filter replacement and a written report, plus 10% off repairs and priority scheduling.

Mini-split replacement across Northern Utah

We replace ductless systems from our home base in Brigham City. Mini-splits here face hot, dry summers and sub-zero winter nights, so a new one has to handle both.

Box Elder County: Perry, Mantua, Willard, Brigham City, Corinne and Tremonton. From Sardine Canyon to the Bear River Valley, outdoor units need to sit high enough to stay clear of drifting snow.

Cache Valley: Hyrum, Nibley, Logan, North Logan and Smithfield. Long, cold stretches during winter inversions put a heating system to the test, and that is where an old mini-split shows its age.

Weber and Davis County: Layton, South Ogden, Ogden and North Ogden. In many older homes here, a mini-split heats and cools an addition or a converted attic that the main system was never built to serve.

Frequently asked questions

Should I repair or replace my mini-split?+
If the system is older, needs repeated repairs or has a failed compressor, replacement is often the better value. If it is newer and one part has failed, a repair may be all you need, and we will tell you which way we would go.
Can you reuse my existing line set?+
Sometimes. If the copper tubing is in good shape and suits the new equipment, it can stay. If it is damaged or the wrong size, we replace it.
How long does a mini-split replacement take?+
A single-zone swap is usually finished in a day. Systems with several indoor heads or new electrical work take longer, and we give you a time estimate along with your price.
Is financing available for a new mini-split?+
Yes. Financing is available through our lending partners. See our financing page or call us for details.
