HVAC System Repair in Northern Utah

Heating or cooling acting up? We test the whole system, find the real cause and give you the price before any repair begins.

Why did your heating or cooling stop working right?

Most HVAC breakdowns trace back to a failed electrical part, blocked airflow, a control problem or a refrigerant leak, and testing shows which one before you pay for a fix. This page is for problems that are hard to pin on one piece of equipment, or that affect heating and cooling alike. The blower, thermostat, wiring and drains serve the whole system. So one fault can look like a furnace problem in January and an AC problem in July. When you already know which unit is failing, go straight to AC repair, furnace repair, heat pump repair or ductless AC repair. To see how the pieces fit together, visit whole-system HVAC.

Warning signs you need HVAC repair

Nothing happens when the thermostat calls

You raise or lower the setting and the system stays silent. A tripped breaker, a blown fuse on the control board, a safety switch that shut things down or a thermostat with no power are the usual suspects.

The fan runs but the air is the wrong temperature

Air moves through the vents, but it feels cool in winter or warm in summer. The part that makes heat or cold has stopped while the blower keeps going. A failed igniter, a dead capacitor on the outdoor unit or a low refrigerant charge are common reasons.

Water around the equipment

A puddle by the furnace in summer usually means the air conditioner's condensate drain is clogged. High-efficiency furnaces make water too, so a winter puddle can come from the same kind of blockage. Many systems have a float switch that shuts everything off when the drain backs up.

New noises, odd smells or a tripping breaker

Squealing, buzzing, grinding, a burning smell or a breaker that trips each time the system starts all point to an electrical or mechanical fault. Turn the system off and call us. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company first.

Common causes of HVAC breakdowns

Capacitors, contactors and relays

These small electrical parts start and run the motors in your system. A capacitor stores a jolt of power to get a motor spinning. A contactor is the switch that sends power to the outdoor unit. Heat and constant on-and-off use wear them down, and they are among the repairs we make most often.

Blower motor and control board trouble

The blower moves air for heating and cooling alike. When its motor weakens, or the control board that tells it when to run fails, both seasons suffer. Age and power surges are frequent causes.

Restricted airflow

A clogged filter, a dirty indoor coil or a row of closed vents starves the system of air. In summer the indoor coil can freeze into a block of ice. In winter the furnace can overheat and shut itself off.

Thermostat and wiring faults

Loose thermostat wires, dead batteries, a wrong setting or a thermostat hung in a sunny or drafty spot can send a bad signal. The equipment follows its orders, and the orders are wrong.

What to expect from an HVAC repair visit

Call or request a repair online and we will book a time during business hours. When our technician arrives, we ask what you noticed, when it started and what changed recently, such as a power outage or a new thermostat. Then we test the system step by step. We check the thermostat and its wiring, measure voltage and the electrical draw of the motors, and inspect the blower, filter and indoor coil. On cooling equipment we read the refrigerant pressures. On heating equipment we check the ignition and safety controls.

Once we find the cause, we explain it in plain language and give you the price up front, before any repair begins. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you how long it should take. After the repair we run the system through a full cycle and check it again. For gas equipment that includes a carbon monoxide check. Our repair work is backed by a warranty on parts and labor.

If your equipment is near the end of its life, we will say so honestly. Sometimes a new system makes more sense than another repair, and our HVAC system installation and replacement page explains that path. Regular care heads off many of these breakdowns. Our VIP Maintenance Plan is $240 a year for one 2-hour visit a year covering an 88-point HVAC and plumbing inspection, a 1-inch filter replacement and a written report, plus 10% off repairs and priority scheduling.

HVAC repair across Northern Utah

Our repair technicians work out of Brigham City. Cold snaps and summer heat are when systems break most, because that is when they run the longest.

Box Elder County: Corinne, Brigham City, Perry, Willard, Mantua and Tremonton. Freeze-thaw swings and seasonal dust are hard on outdoor units and the electrical parts inside them.

Cache Valley: North Logan, Logan, Hyrum, Nibley and Smithfield. When an inversion settles in, furnaces run for days with few breaks, and that is when weak motors and igniters give out.

Weber and Davis County: South Ogden, Layton, Ogden and North Ogden. Older homes here may have wiring and controls left over from two or three past systems, which we sort out as part of the diagnosis.

Many repairs can be avoided with a seasonal tune-up each spring and fall. If the real problem is airflow, duct sealing and repair may be the fix. And if the thermostat is the weak link, see smart thermostats.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a repair is worth it?+
We look at the age of the equipment, how often it has needed repairs and the cost of this fix. If the repair makes sense we recommend it, and if the system is near the end of its life we tell you that too.
What can I check before I call?+
Make sure the thermostat has power and is set to heat or cool, check the breakers for the furnace and outdoor unit, and look at the filter. If those are fine, turn the system off and call us.
Do your HVAC repairs come with a warranty?+
Yes. Our repairs come with a warranty on parts and labor.
Do you repair HVAC systems for businesses?+
Yes. This page covers homes. For offices, stores and other business buildings, see our commercial HVAC page.
